Restoration project leads to a discovery
Posted on: 05-27-2020 by Floor Covering Media

Jersey City's Mayor was attempting to make the best of the lockdown, as he greenlit the City Hall restoration project early.

Since this particular project was already scheduled at some point later this year, restoration crews could break ground ahead of time without disrupting many people. Employees were at home and most of the building was empty. Construction workers made the discovery when they were removing vinyl flooring, installed during the 1960's. They found a geometric surface pattern. The original floors were intact.

These vinyl squares, installed decades ago, were covering encaustic tile with a geometric pattern original to the building. The tile was under asbestos. Initially, it didn't seem salvageable? But, after a thorough remediation and cleaning process, the English encaustic tiles installed at the turn of the 20th century looked impressive. It was an amazing transformation.

However, this was not the only surprise. Parquet floors were found in the Mayor's office installed a century ago hiding under the aging blue carpet.
