Having second thoughts about open spaces?
Posted on: 07-24-2020 by Floor Covering Media

Advocates for open floor plans may say that such spaces may provide longer sight lines, better traffic flow, larger spaces for social gatherings and an abundance of natural light. Converting a home from a closed space to an open space is an intriguing idea, at a glance.

But not everybody is in a hurry to convert a traditional home with walls to an open space. The noise that open floor plans may create present unwelcome distractions without walls.

Odors are likely to linger, which may be a deal breaker for easily distracted, individuals.

Concealing clutter might present its share of challenges. Dirt and germs aren’t contained.

Some culinary enthusiasts find food preparation in an open floor plan exceeding difficult. Appliances, preparation spaces, and other kitchen features tend to be located farther apart compared with those of a closed floor plan. Plan on walking more when preparing meals. Kitchen hazards are not walled off plus dirty dishes in the sink are in full view of visitors.

Prepare for comfort issues. Without walls, it is difficult to contain cooled and heated air. Expect to pay higher energy bills. Storage solutions might be problematic in open spaces. Steel supports may be required to reinforce walls in open spaces; that aren’t load bearing.
