An experimental hook-and-loop attachment system devised for floors and walls at Austria's Graz University of Technology has made a breakthrough. A true hook-and-loop arrangement like Velcro isn't possible with rigid surfaces. But the team devised an approximation where protrusions were cast into concrete and a flexible sheet material was 3D printed with the corresponding protrusions, allowing the sheet to be to be non-permanently adhered onto the concrete; which separates long-lived elements, used for durable load-bearing structures, from short-lived elements such as: installations, surfaces, floors and non-load-bearing interior walls. Applications are thought provoking. Replacing subfloors, floors and walls are both complex and time-consuming jobs. Such an attachment system can symplify an otherwise complex project!
