Bowing floor confounds Killingly school leaders

Floor Covering Media found an article, published in the Norwich Bulletin, about an issue raised with the new school's gym floor. This article, written by Kate Bucklin, informs readers that the town will hire an engineering consultant to try to figure out how to fix “cupping” of the gym floor at the year-and-a-half-old Killingly High School. Cupping happens when the edges of a board are high and the center is lower. It can happen after water spills on to the floor and the wood absorbs it. High humidity can cause cupping. Further investigation by a flooring company found that water was settling below the floor in a portion of the gym. Holes were drilled through the floor and down into the stone and gravel under the foundation. One theory is that water is gathering in “pits” under the floor that are part of the radon extraction system, according to the article. More at the Norwich Bulletin (Connecticut).
