A surface project for a pool at the Hard Rock Hotel Marbella (in Spain) by Cuarto Interior is receiving recognition. It was nominated for the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards (RABDA) and the International Hotel & Property Awards (IHAPA) 2023. What is it about this particular project that makes it so special?
For starters, it is located on the rooftop of the hotel with unique bar and pool.
It's also located near the popular Duque beach on the Costa del Sol (Spain).
This is not just any pool. The interior designers customized the pool's surface, using ONIX glass mosaic tiles, which has created an intriguing combination of straight and curved immersed shapes, which are reminiscent of the 1960's.
The highly acclaimed hotel, owned by Stoneweg Hospitality and operated by Palladium Hotel Group, has 383 rooms and suites and creates an atmosphere for adults to the rhythm of fabulous sounds, in line with the hotel chain’s vision and mission. For this major renovation project, interior designers Germán Álvarez and José Manuel Fernández opted to pay tribute to Spain’s swinging sixties, known as the yé-yé movement from the English “yeah, yeah!”, and which has sought to live life to the full, doing away with impositions and rules.
The T-shaped pool featuring glass mosaic tiles create a series of patterns in the basin that form rounded shapes and straight lines. The surrounding pool space is furnished with sunbeds, loungers and awnings, which provide their guests with the unincumbered freedom to experience their stay at their hotel exactly as they wish; though there are more private areas too when it is time to get away from it all. There is also a performance stage for aspiring artists.
For the pool basin lining, the interior designers selected an ONIX glass mosaic tile in Alice blue and Maya blue tones that was custom-made for the project. The small 25*25 mm square tiles were used to trace a series of patterns that reflect the trends of the decade. The matt finish mosaic chips are what assure guests the non-slip surface they would naturally expect as they are immersed wihin the transporting experience during their stay at the hotel.
Details of the room décors reflect the style of the freedom-loving sixties that shunned conventionalisms. The same is true of the pool area with its mix of curves and straight lines; featuring the blue, orange and red color scheme, which feature pops of gold. This design has effectively revived the heyday of the Costa del Sol during the 1960's while recreating the sense of freedom and rebelliousness characteristic of the day. It's a place where music and fun precede everything else. Few would challenge the originality of this design, which is likely the reason it is deserving of the aforementioned nominations.
