A fresh approach to senior living
Posted on: 03-24-2024 by Elizabeth Yokel

The Spain-based senior citizen co-living space that Romero & Vallejo designed recently won the APE Grupo Architecture Award. Vitápolis, in Toledo Spain, introduces a fresh approach to senior living, catering to their functional, social and emotional needs. It is an award that underscores the vitality and value of choosing ceramics within architecture and interior design.

Judges included the Italian architect Benedetta Tagliabue (EMBT Architects), Tomás Alía (Caramba Estudio), recipient of the Gold Medal for Fine Arts, and Santa Morro who was representing the Architects’ Association of Castellón.

The project, in spite of the building's proportions, embodies a well-resolved social, joyful and functional piece of architecture. Emphasis was placed on the consistent and natural use of ceramics, as the team employed a traditional material language, which imparted a cheerful and contemporary atmosphere. A certain admiration was expressed for the project's social character while accommodating the functional and emotional needs of the senior community. It was said that the creative project was one that offered a fresh perspective.
