Prefinished, Unfinished, or Hand-Scraped Hickory Flooring?

Floor Covering Media found an article, published at ArticlesBase.com; a free online articles dictionary, about options for installing hickory flooring.  This article, written by their staff, informs readers that, in general, hickory is a dense domestic species with a Janka scale rating of 1820. While this characteristic makes the wood durable, it is also difficult to machine, sand, and stain. As a result, those opting to have the red and tan patina of hickory have three options: installing prefinished, unfinished, or hand-scraped flooring.  Prefinished is, perhaps, the most straightforward to install. The wood, as explained by the product name, already has a stain added. When it comes to installation, all you or a professional needs to do is install the planks – no finishing or sanding is needed. Prefinished products, on the other hand, come in a limited number of stains and don't blend in as well with existing flooring.  Though if blending in and getting the right stain is crucial, an unfinished product is the way to go. Nevertheless, a different approach needs to be taken for installing unfinished hickory flooring. A belt sander should be used to even the surface. Preferably, sanding is done with an 80-grit belt, smoothing with 120-grit, and all finishing touches with 220-grit, according to the article.
